History

The Club originated in 1964, calling itself The Soo and District Kennel club. A meeting was held to form an executive and put together a constitution which was originally based on the Grand Traverse Kennel Club of Michigan. Our current Constitution is subject to the Canadian Kennel Club’s Constitution and the Canadian Kennel Club Code of Ethics.

Two matches sanctioned by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) were required before the CKC would allow a sanctioned show. The first sanctioned match was held in June 1965 at Avery stadium and the second one at the Steel City motor building in September 1965. The first sanctioned show took place in July 1966 at the Avery Stadium. In the ensuing years all breed sanctioned shows were held at the old Memorial Gardens, McMeeken Centre and Sault Armouries. Obedience became part of the show in 1979 with RallyO trials begining in 2010 and Canine Good Citizen testing offered in 2012.

In 1968 the club name was changed to the Sault Ste. Marie Kennel Club and incorporated in 1987. Many of our monthly meetings were held at members houses then City Hall then to our Clubhouse in 1992, our present location, 76, 4th Line West, Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
